Fulbright International Summer Institute



Program Name: Fulbright International Summer Institute (FISI)

Eligibility: "FISI is open to applicants from any country. Applicants can be undergraduate or post-graduate students, teachers, lecturers and professionals. They will be considered without regard to race, religion, sex and/or physical impairment."

Brief Description: "The Fulbright International Summer Institute (FISI) is an academic and cultural program created by the Bulgarian-American Fulbright Commission in 2002. FISI offers one-week intensive courses (2 sessions_ in a wide variety of subject areas: politics and international relations; business and economics; law, communication, education, science, social studies, art, culture and Bulgarian studies. All courses are taught in English by distinguished professors from the US, Europe and Bulgaria, most of whom are Fulbright grantees or alumni. Along with the academic program, FISI offers a rich cultural program and opportunities for intercultural communication."

Program Duration: 1 or 2 weeks in early August

Application Process: Applications are typically due in May and are to be submitted online. The following materials are required for complete submission:

  1. A completed application form
  2. Diploma for completed higher education or an academic transcript
  3. Curriculum Vitae
  4. Two references from university faculty or employee

All items must be in English. Legalization for official documents is not required.

Miscellaneous: The participation fee is 800 euro for 2 weeks or 400 euro per week and includes the following

  • Tuition
  • Meals (3 times a day, buffet style)
  • Accommodation (double occupancy rooms)
  • Cultural enrichment program and excursions
  • Transportation to/from the Sofia airport

A limited number of merit-based partial grants will be awarded. Upon completion of the program, scholars are presented a Fulbright certificate verifying the completion of their enrolled courses.
